Contrary to what most people think, OEM ATV parts are not any superior than aftermarket ATV parts. Like any product in a dynamic marketplace, aftermarket motorcycle parts manufacturers often find a way to improve upon the performance or the design of the part. A comparison of the two types of parts is often contrary to what many people assume.
OEM Parts:
OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer, and OEM indicates that these parts are the original parts that come straight from the company that built your bike. Generally, OEM parts are built in-house, in the same factories where your bike itself was built. Often times however, manufacturers will subcontract other major companies to build parts for their bikes that come as original equipment (things like Brembo brakes, Bosch electronics, all motorcycle tires, and so on.) Even if they are built by someone else, if they come on your bike from the factory, they are still considered to be “original equipment.”
Aftermarket Motorcycle Parts:
Aftermarket parts are all the parts built by third-party companies – stuff that doesn’t come on your bike from the factory, but are instead built as replacements for those parts. Aftermarket parts usually serve one of two purposes: either they are suitable replacements for OEM parts at a lower price, or they are built to be higher-performance, more stylish, or serve a more specific purpose than the more generic parts that come on it from the factory. The manufactures of aftermarket motorcycle parts must apply for the rights to reproduce a part. Aftermarket motorcycle parts manufactures operate under strict guidelines and by nature of their profession must be absolutely precise in their design.
If you have a mainstream bike and are looking at modifying it with aftermarket motorcycle mods into a power bike with lots of accessories, bear in mind that every country has its own traffic laws and regulations. There are also motorcycle modification laws governing every country which shouldn’t be broken. Find out what the motorcycle mods that are legal, mods that are illegal but you can actually get away with and mods that will always get you caught.
